傳聞已久的惠普分家新聞已經經過官方證實，未來惠普公司將旗下負責個人電腦PC 及印表機業務（Printing and Personal Systems，PPS），與針對企業方面提供伺服器、解決方案業務，拆分成兩家公司。拆分後，兩家公司的市值都會超過 500 億美元規模。
此次惠普正式將旗下的個人業務與企業業務分家，好處則是讓兩個領域的業務能夠聚焦經營、靈活調配研發資源。此次業務分拆則讓人回想起 1999 年惠普聚焦 PC 業務時，選擇與康柏電腦（Compaq）合併，將高科技研發業務分拆成今天的安捷倫科技（Agilent Technologies）。
但與當年安捷倫的成功分拆相比，目前而不確定投資者如何看待這次個人電腦、印表機業務的分拆，尤其在這個電腦出貨量連連下跌的「後 PC 時代」。近幾年惠普 PC 業務改革並不成功，從 WebOS 手機、平板產品線難產到將整個 WebOS 出售給 LG，目前後續推出的平板產品線依然屬於小打小鬧之作，仍然無法扭轉該企業傳統 PC 廠商的形象。
不過在惠特曼的努力下，惠普的 PC 業務在 2014 年回暖，實現了同比 12% 的營收增長，終止了 2013 年的下跌。但是 PC 業務的利潤率依然十分低，僅有 4% 左右。而個人業務另一支柱的印表機業務雖然有著高達 18% 的高利潤率，但隨著移動智慧設備的興起，印表機的營收已連續數個季度出現下降。
對這次個人業務拆分，Recode 也從知情人士處得到更多內幕。原來惠普早就想將「不那麼成功的業務」出售，從而達到資產優化目的，實現更多優質的合併與收購（例如一直談不攏的 EMC 合併）。於是去年惠普曾打算以 320 億美元將 PC 業務出售給 Dell 和聯想，但出價沒有得到對方的青睞。後來惠普還先後試圖將企業關鍵伺服器業務和 IT 服務出售給 IBM 和一些印度電腦公司，最後談判均失敗告終。
根據官方的資訊，未來拆成兩家獨立上市公司的惠普，負責企業市場的公司名稱為Hewlett-Packard Enterprise，而負責個人電腦與列印市場的公司稱作HP Inc.兩家公司均使用當前LOGO。同時，惠普的裁員數量將再增加5000人，估計共裁員55000人。此外，原本HP執行長惠特曼將轉任Hewlett-Packard Enterprise 擔任總裁暨執行長，並且由Pat Russo擔任董事長職位。而個人業務的 HP Inc.則將由Dion Weisler擔任總裁暨執行長職位，惠特曼也將同時兼任董事長。
