英語易學難精，英文裡很多成語（idioms）、俚語（slang）、片語（phrases），十之八九無法直譯。這三種詞彙經常是字字都懂，但整句連起來就不懂。

老外找你到PUB喝杯小酒，會說：Okay, I'll buy you a drink. 這裡的buy就是字面意思「買」。但buy這字除了「買」之外，還有幾個截然不同的用法：

Buy it
是二次世界大戰開始用的俚語，意思是「死亡」，特別是在戰士在沙場上「陣亡」。電影英倫情人（The English Patient）中，一個英國傷兵躺在醫院談到一位同袍時說：He bought it.（他陣亡了。）

喝酒聊天時，你提出一個計畫，他聽了很欣賞：I'll buy it. 這裡的buy卻是「我買你的帳」，表示贊同，同意的意思。

To buy the farm 美國俚語，也解作「陣亡」
You know Dave? He bought the farm while on a training exercise last week. 這句不是「他上週在接受訓練時買了個農場。」，而是「在上週訓練時掛了。」

換個場景，如果老外對你說：They don't buy your story. Buy這裡是「相信、接受」的意思。這句話的真正涵義是「他們不相信你說的話。」

可以從這裡推想，原來我們買一樣東西，是基於一種「相信」，例句：
I will never buy that story about you getting lost.（我才不信你會迷路。）
You've got no chance. He'll never buy it.（你根本就沒有機會，他絕不會相信的。）

Buy time
常用在商場交涉的過程上，有「拖延時間、爭取時間」的意思。例如：They are trying to buy time by prolonging the negotiations.（他們嘗試以延長談判過程來拖延時間。）

總統馬英九上午到高雄進行勘災行程，不過在行程之前卻秘密安排到高雄市調查站聽取年度工作簡報，由於正值張顯耀疑似洩密案引發聯想，吸引許多媒體前往採訪，馬總統短暫停留半小時後隨即前往災區勘災，沒有任何回應。

總統馬英九今天南下與高雄氣爆罹難者家屬自救會及竹東里受災戶自救會對話，家屬盼中央增編特別統籌分配款與箱涵專款。

馬總統關切高雄石化氣爆後續，今天在高雄市安排3個行程，第一個點到凱旋霖園圖書館與高雄氣爆罹難者家屬自救會及竹東里受災戶自救會對話，10餘名代表都盼中央給高雄更多的協助，也盼確保高雄不再有石化管線危機。

高雄氣爆罹難者家屬自救會會長陳冠榮的兩點訴求是盼中央增編特別統籌分配款、提撥檢測高雄市箱涵地下管線等專款，以確保高雄石化管線的安全。

稍後馬總統轉往林榮里災民自救會，聽取林榮里民的心聲與打算提出國賠的主張。
