在 Windows XP 與 Windows 7 兩大成功的系統後面，Vista 與 Windows 8 都有著表現不好的狀態，但這不僅僅是因為前作表現太好的原因。
Vista 帶來了全新的 UAC 試圖保護帳號安全，同時華麗的視窗界面更想讓 Windows 更有視覺感。但 UAC 最終帶來的只是使用者的困擾，推出之後，有不少文章都是先教你如何關掉這功能。加上 Vista 推出的時代剛好是小筆電正火熱的時期，加上後起的 CULV，當時的行動筆電效能多數跑不動 Vista，更不用說還在運行 Windows XP 那群老機器根本上不了 Vista。

Windows 8 同樣是一款大變革的系統，加入了大量觸控介面，儘管已經沒有效能面的問題，但習慣桌面介面的使用者終究無法脫離 Windows 7，大量的傳統派最終選擇了留在舊系統，造成了 Windows 7 與 XP 不死的局面。硬體的大環境面，Windows 8 面臨新一代平板電腦更新潮。核心依舊走桌面系統的 Windows 8 在平板電腦上表現依舊不如 Android 與 iOS，儘管微軟都親自下海做 Surface，但依舊無法拉高 Windows 8 的市佔與聲勢。
經過了 Windows 8.1 的更新和 Haswell 處理器的換機潮也沒能為 Windows 8 挽回些聲勢，反而在 2013 後半年的新筆電都只想著變平板，強勁的筆電更新數量也不如往年，推不動 PC 產業與 Windows 8 其實也是剛好而已。

經過了 Vista 與 Windows 8 之後，Windows 9 自然是萬眾期待，光是幾個走向小消息和明年發表的新聞就足已引起不少討論。可見大部分用戶還是對於 Windows 有不少期待，至於 Windows 9 要有什麼爆點，不少意見都會指向系統應該免費，畢竟 OS X 已經全面免費。只是身為賣軟體出身的微軟並沒有賺什麼硬體錢，這系統稅要怎麼收可是個大問題。

Windows 8 和 Vista 被拿來比較也已經不是第一次，應該也不會是最後一次。在兩次大環境都不好的情況下，Windows 8 與 Vista 似乎有著相同的命運，就連微軟內部都有傳出消息稱 Windows 8 為新 Vista。
