Sony社長平井一夫曾於今年(2013年)1月時證實Sony正考慮出售鋰離子電池事業，日本媒體也於1月底報導，Sony鋰離子電池事業考慮和NEC/日產(Nissan)合資設立的電動車用鋰離子電池製造公司「Automotive Energy Supply(以下簡稱AES)」進行合併，AES將取得Sony電池部門「Sony Energy Devices Corp.」的大半股權，之後日本官民基金「產業革新機構(INCJ)」並將對AES進行出資；惟隨著日圓走貶帶動電池事業獲利好轉、加上新訂單增加，故傳出Sony電池事業不賣了！
據日經指出，Sony於1991年領先業界率先成功量產鋰離子電池，目前其年營收規模約1,500億日圓，根據日本調查公司Techno Systems Research的資料顯示，2012年Sony於鋰離子電池市場的市佔率為8%左右、位居全球第4位。
