I took delivery of my Seashell Grey V60 D5 on December 4th at Taoyuan Volvo. The car comes with a set of Michelin Primacy 3 tires.
From that moment, and especially after a short trip to KaoHsiung and return, I can sense abnormal noise from the tire, especially from the front.
There is a strange rotational sounds of various frequency and pitch coming from the front and especially if you release the accelerator, the car exhibit this strange nuisance. It does not feel the car is well dampened as well. When I was driving on the highway 1, the road and tire noise above 110km/h was absolutely annoying. Even on city driving, you can pick up this noise. I have to turn up the volume on my stereo to cover this up.
I went back to Volvo, they sent me to their contract vendor who is responsible for 4 wheel alignment. It is a place where the equipment looks really fancy but the technician has no idea what he is talking about, aside from a bad attitude.
I brought the car back to Taipei for a specialized shop. They immediately, after test drive, told me that there is something wrong with my tire. Upon closer inspection, three main areas are wrong. 1. The tire was wrongly balanced, from Volvo factory, instead of a 100g weight attached to one of the tire, after careful calibration, a 40g was used and the tire was fine. 2. It appears the tire contains moisture inside. It simply did not exhibit the Michelin trademark of well dampened Q feeling. 3. The 4 wheel alignement, especially the back sets was all wrong. After 2 hours of re-tuning, rechecking and rebalancing, my baby emerged reborn.
1. The noise level was significantly lower. Still a bit because the tire already suffered minior deformation.
2. The traction was superb. I feel the car was much more responsive
3. The well known Michelin suppleness is back. The sense of quality/comfort/ride was restored. V60 emerged totally re-born.
I drove back to my residence at Longtan, for the first time, passing the mark of 175km/h, kicking some ass at a Golf GTI!! Ha Ha, the revenge of the Volvo against the lousy German!
Advice to all owner. New Car does not necessarily means it is defect free. You have to know to tell the difference.
After some 3.5 weeks, I feel as of yesterday, I had truly own a beloved V60!
Great car, great value, great styling, and now, a driving satisfaction to match!
