二○○三年，全球最大網路設備公司思科（Cisco）在美國控告華為侵犯智慧財產權，起訴書多達七十頁，賠償金額是個會讓華為從此從地球上消失的天文數字。

當時華為已經逐步走出海外，把產品賣到美國與世界各地。「思科只給了我一個PDF檔，告訴我take it or leave it（接不接受由你），」被任正非派到美國處理法務的郭平苦笑。原本任正非給他的指示是「盡全力達成和解」，但在看完思科的要求後，「我們決定，即使死也要戰死，不能舉著白旗被人打死，」郭平說。事隔十年，郭平目前已成華為三位輪值CEO之一。

一個產業龍頭向當時才冒出頭的華為宣戰，道理很簡單，意識到華為技術、價格雙雙產生威脅之下，如果不剷除，將會是可怕的後患。思科的眼光很精準，華為的確在十年後成為如芒刺在背的對手。

任正非一路低調，思科這一仗，彷彿亮劍，寶劍一出鞘就已被看見，再也收不回來，只好一路向前衝。

「十年來我天天思考的都是失敗，對成功視而不見，也沒有什麼榮譽感、自豪感，而是危機感。也許是這樣，才存活了十年。」說這話的，是世界五百強企業、全球通訊產業界龍頭，華為創辦人任正非。

根據《華爾街日報》（The Wall Street Journal）二○一二年的估計，華為如果上市，市值大約在二百九十三億美元左右，持有一．四％股份的任正非，身價至少在四億美元（約合新台幣一百二十億元）以上。

這個數字雖稱不上超級富豪，但他卻是許多歐美廠商的夢魘。早在十年前，思科執行長錢伯斯（John Chambers）就稱他是「令人尊敬的對手」。當昔日的網路通訊巨頭：摩托羅拉、阿爾卡特朗訊、諾基亞西門子紛紛面臨衰退危機時，他所帶領的華為不斷逆勢上升，未來五年，年複合成長可望續衝一○％。
