《高等教育紀事》(Chronicle of Higher Education)報導，這份「研究所招生與學位：2002至2012年」的報告指出，從2011年秋季至2012年秋季，新註冊就讀研究所學位（graduate certificate），包括教育專門學位、碩士和博士課程的學生超過46萬1,000人，增加了1.8 ％，一改前面連續兩年的減少，而其中58％的新生是女性。

而從2011年秋季到2012年秋季，就讀美國研究所的國際學生則增長了8％，比前一年度的7.8 ％幅度微增。相比之下，同期美國公民和永久居民新註冊就讀研究所的人數只增長了0.6 ％。

美國公民和永久居民在科學、技術、工程和數學領域等一些科系的新生註冊人數稍稍下降。如果計算新生和舊生的總人數，2012年秋季的本地學生下降2％，有將近174萬人，而前一年下降比例是0.8％。

在回覆這份調查的675所院校中，總共收到了將近兩百萬份2012年秋季入學申請。這個申請數字比前一年度增加了約4％，不過整體錄取率39.5％，比2011年秋季40％以上的錄取率略有降低。其中，教育、商業和醫學領域的研究生新生最多，佔2012年秋季入學新生的將近一半。

康奈爾大學副教務長克努特（Barbara A. Knuth）說，美國高等教育國際化有其好處。不過她也說，如果不能放寬移民限制，讓更多的國際學生留在美國為經濟作出貢獻，這個趨勢令人擔憂。

2012年秋季，康奈爾大學1,820名研究所新生當中，有872名國際學生，本地生和國際學生的比例將近一半一半。

印第安納大學布盧明頓校區(loomington)研究生學院院長溫布希（James C. Wimbush）教授則表示，該校的研究生人數略有減少。其中，人文和教育的減幅最大，而社會科學和自然科學的表現還是很好。

對於景氣不佳、政府資助減少和學生貸款趨嚴減低美國人追求高等學歷的意願，研究所委員會主席斯圖爾特（Debra W. Stewart）女士仍持謹慎樂觀態度。她認為，美國大學很有彈性，有能力對預算縮減和未來高度的不確定性做出迅速的反應，不過，這對一個國家並不好，如果想確保人才，就必須勇往直前。
