和重要客戶講電話講到一半，突然聽到電話那頭說：You are breaking up!

你心裡一沉：糟了，客戶想跟我斷絕關係，電話又這麼斷斷續續。嘿，別緊張，客戶好端端，他是說你的聲音斷斷續續的，breaking up，用進行式。

聲音斷斷續續的，聽不清楚，有時我們也說：

Your voice isn’t very clear. I think the line is breaking up. Can you repeat that?（你的聲音很不清楚，收訊斷斷續續的，你可以再說一次嗎？）

關於講電話的聲音不清楚，你還可以說：

1. The reception is bad.
2. We have a bad reception/connection.

reception這個字在這裡代表收訊，特別是手機的收訊，另外一個實用的意思是櫃檯接待處，而櫃檯人員就叫做receptionist。

以後聽到breaking up可不要一下子就翻成分手，如果解釋為分手，介詞是with。

1. John just broke up with Ann last week. （John上禮拜才剛和Ann分手）
2. I’m breaking up with you. （我要和你分手）
3. Sue just gone through a bad breakup with her boyfriend.（Sue剛經歷和男友糟糕的分手過程）

go through這個片語指的是：經歷或走過（困難的時期）；a bad breakup很難看、很糟糕的分手，an amicably breakup則是和平分手。

break這個字，如果出現在這樣的句子中：I’m so broke that….意思是指，我沒錢、我現在很窮的意思，如果是很熟的朋友要約你去吃大餐，你就可以直接說：I think I’ll leave/pass it. = I’ll give it a miss.最後加上一句傳神的 Because I’m so broke. 就可以了。
