美國國務院官員今天（台北時間16日）指出，美國早已承認馬英九放棄美國的永久居留身分，這件事已經結案。

美國國務院官員接受媒體詢問有關台灣《壹週刊》報導，馬英九總統與美國稅務議題時回應指出，美國早已「承認」（Recognize）馬總統已放棄在美國的永久居留身分，此事已經結案。

至於馬英九是何時放棄，或以何種方式放棄美國的永久居留身分，國務院官員以事涉個人的簽證與移民身分資料為由，表示無法提供進一步資訊。

這是美國國務院首度針對馬英九的綠卡身分問題明確表態，同時也是美國在台協會（AIT）華盛頓總部日前致函駐美代表沈呂巡，說明AIT過去即已知悉馬總統已放棄其先前所擁有的永久居留身分一事，並早已列入相關美國移民機關檔案之後，美方高層再度針對馬總統的綠卡議題提出說明。
