Yahoo奇摩今公布「2014年度十大新聞」，其中重大災難事件比重高達5成，包含高雄氣爆、北捷殺人案件、馬航失蹤、復興航空空難、以及伊波拉病毒疫情。其中以7月31日晚間發生的「高雄氣爆」造成多人死傷，讓台灣民眾最揪心，成為年度十大新聞榜首。

另外，食安議題從去年的有毒食品延燒至今年的餿水油事件，國人食安信心拉警報，「黑心食品」與「抵制頂新」因而名列十大新聞排名中第二與第四名。

值得注意的是，公民力量崛起的現象，也反映在年度十大新聞排行榜中。延續去年的公民運動潮，今年初的「太陽花學運」，與人稱「雨傘革命」的港民爭取普選社會運動同樣成為網友注目焦點，名列年度十大新聞中的第三名及第十名。
