以消弭貧窮、提高教育率、兩性平等為主的「聯合國千禧年發展目標」在2015年即將屆滿，眼看許多當初訂下的目標，包括降低兒童死亡率都尚未達到，來自美國基督教團體的領袖在一場會議上大聲呼籲，希望各國基督徒能敦促他們的政府，積極投入更多資源來達成目標。教會也可以透過禱告，讓這項提升全球人口生活品質與壽命、消弭貧窮的遠大計畫能夠更加落實。

2000年由聯合國提出的千禧年發展目標，提出8大項必須在2015年完成的任務，包括消弭貧窮與飢荒、提高基本教育普遍率、倡導兩性平等、降低兒童死亡率、改善母親身體健康、對抗愛滋病及瘧疾與確保環境永續及創造全球合作發展機制。

上周在美國紐約，包括世界展望會、基督教「彌迦行動」（Micah Challenge）、全美拉丁裔福音派聯盟、「寄居者」組織與世界福音聯盟等團體一同開會，上週聚集在美國紐約開會。與會代表呼籲眾教會與各地基督徒及非營利組織，能夠投入更多心力，讓聯合國當初訂下的目標在期限內完成。

世界展望會會長斯特恩斯指出，從1990年到2010年以來，因防治瘧疾與肺結核出現成效，2100萬人因此得救，20億人有乾淨水源可以飲用，脫離赤貧的人數已達7億人，其中基督徒之所以關心貧窮人，是以《聖經》耶穌親近窮人為榜樣。他說，「當世界在慶賀這些目標成功訂定之後，目前仍有許多地方需要繼續努力，而教會便扮演了相當重要的角色。」

非洲盧安達總統卡加梅也指出，在2015年聯合國千禧年發展目標到期後，對抗貧窮的工作仍需要持續進行。他期待地指出，「外界正在關注2015年後，開發中國家應更加掌握自己的未來走向，非洲大陸長期被視為沉默之地，拜經濟起飛與政治進步所賜，非洲正要展現自己的潛力。」

然而，根據聯合國兒童基金會指出，5歲以下兒童早夭人數，雖已從1990年的1200萬人減少到2012年的660萬人，但與聯合國原訂降低1990年兒童死亡率2/3的目標，仍有一段距離。按照目前進度，最快要等到2028年才能達成。去年5歲以下早夭兒童的死因，大多為可預防的疾病，其中肺炎佔17％，霍亂佔9％，瘧疾佔7％；降低霍亂死亡率的成效最為明顯，1990年到2012年已減少近一半。

基金會副主任 古普塔表示，「當初這些目標雖然相當遠大，但現在要獲得突飛猛進的進展仍是可能的，即使是在資源相當缺乏的國家都可以辦得到。」

聯合國秘書長潘基文稍早在一場集結慈善家、各國政要與企業代表的會議上曾指出，聯合國是最能有效聚集各種力量提升國際和平、健康及教育品質的平台。他在今年6月時指出，聯合國千禧年發展目標也是有史以來，在全球推動抗貧最有效的計畫。

【綜合報導】美國聯邦政府部分機構「關門」，紐約著名景點自由女神也成為「受害者」，從昨日開始被迫關閉，讓不少遊客大失所望。景點入口相關單位設立暫停營運的告示牌，有些拍不到自由女神的遊客，乾脆就跟這張「關閉海報」合影。

現場工作人員手舉各種語言的告示牌，把自由女神關閉的消息告訴遊客。受影響遊客可選擇退錢，或改為乘坐小艇在紐約港灣觀光一小時。有一名來自德國的老翁伊豪斯就說，他認為11月以前自由女神都不會開放參觀，「這真是一個非常差的政治制度，反對派竟然擁有這麼大的力量。」
