冬末春初，你是否像以往一樣，徹底檢討了過去生活、工作上的種種缺失，並許下「新年新希望」（New Year’s Resolution），冀望在接下來的一年裡重新來過、展開新生？為了強化自己一心向上的決心，2014年該時時默念於心的英文句子就是：I am turning over a new leaf starting 2014! （2014年起，我要煥然一新！）

Turn over a new leaf即是我們中文常講的「（人生、生活）展開新的一頁」，就像書本翻開新的一頁作為新的開始一般，或者直接譯為「改過自新、重新開始」。但要特別注意的是，這個慣用語的「頁」是用leaf（樹葉）來取代page（書頁），英美人士在運用它時，也常會連帶指出欲改進的目標，以下是三個例句：

I'm turning over a new leaf – I'm going to quit smoking. （我要改過自新，開始戒煙了。)

Jessica has a sweet tooth and always eats lots of unhealthy cakes. But she will turn over a new leaf and try good food. (潔西卡喜歡吃甜食，總是吞下很多不健康的蛋糕。但她打算改變了，嘗試去吃好的食物。)

My brother has been a bad person. But after getting out of jail, he will turn over a new leaf – I deeply believe so. (我哥哥是個壞蛋，但我深信他出獄後會改過自新。)

另外一個好用的近義詞是wipe the slate clean（既往不咎、從頭來過）。slate通常指書寫用的「石板」，在此引伸為寫下的「紀錄」；把過去紀錄一掃而空，就可以重新來過了。

例句：

We made some mistakes in 2013. Let’s wipe the slate clean and do better from now on. (我們在2013年犯了些錯誤，讓我們既往不咎從頭來過，從現在起表現得更好。)

至於更口語的用法還包括make a fresh start（創造全新的開始）、start over（重新來過）、reform oneself（改過自新）、be a better person（變得更好）、begin all over again（全部重來）等等。常常把這些用語掛在嘴邊，相信真的會對自己起惕厲效果。2014年一起加油吧！
