原籍阿根廷的天主教教宗方濟各(Pope Francis)從不諱言自己是個足球迷，而本屆世足賽中阿根廷隊也是奪冠希望極高的一對，是地主巴西隊的勁敵。在四年一度的世界盃足球賽即將開戰前夕，方濟各在自己的《推特》發文，表示希望世上每個人都能享受精彩的世界盃賽事，稍早在接受媒體專訪時他笑著說：巴西球迷希望我能夠保持中立，我會遵守承諾的。

方濟各還特別錄製一段影片，將在世足開幕戰前公開播放，方濟各呼籲信眾，要從比賽中學習團結與合作的精神，捨棄種族歧視與貪婪的心。（於慶中／綜合外電報導）
